Hiking in the Arctic presented so many fantastic photographic opportunities! Sure you’re cold, falling through the packed snow to your waist and constantly having to clear the snow off your lens but the freshly powdered landscapes and dark foreboding skies make it all worth it!
There are some amazing hiking guides out there for Northern Norway already (I recommend 68north.com), so this is simply a photographic journey through our favourite hikes! Hope you enjoy!
1. Ryten (Lofoten)
Possibly one of the most photogenic summits in Lofoten, the breathtaking panorama of Kvalvika Beach from Ryten peak made the hard hike through deep snow completely worth it! By the time we started our decent, the sun was beginning the set, casting beautiful golden light over the whole scene. By far our favourite hike of the trip!
2. Hesten (Senja)
Setting out at sea level we began to climb the steep snow-covered trail. Segla mountain rises like a sentinel against the winter sky offering perfect halo photographs! At the summit, the view is nothing short of awe-inspiring: the jagged peaks of Senja, draped in their snowy mantle, stand guard over the deep fjords and shimmering waters below. This is THE image of Senja as you look back over Segla!
3. Fløya (Lofoten)
After climbing the steep, icy stairs we came out onto a plateau where we were greeted by a jaw-dropping panorama of Svolvær and the surrounding archipelago, the jagged peaks and fjords fighting the dark foreboding skies of a passing snowstorm. The contrast between the fresh snow and dark skies made for such a dramatic photo. This is why you go hiking during snowstorms!
Photography Tips for Winter Hiking in Lofoten & Senja:
Gear: Travel light with only 1-2 lenses as the conditions make hiking strenuous. Polarizing and ND filters are a must!
Daylight: Plan your hikes to maximize the limited daylight hours during winter. Early starts are best as the weather may wash out the sunsets.
Respect the Locals: The locals know best. If you arrive and the trail is closed it is probably for a good reason. So stay out!
Photographing the winter landscapes of Lofoten and Senja was a truly unforgettable experience. These hikes offered some of the most spectacular views in Norway, making the effort well worth it. Happy hiking!
